Mirri Maz Duur Character Analysis

Mirri Maz Duur is a woman from a town of shepherds that Khal Drogo’s army raids. After the raid, Daenerys intervenes to stop Khal Drogo’s men from raping the women from the town, including Mirri. Mirri says that she is a healer, though Drogo’s men call her a maegi, meaning a practitioner of dark magic. Mirri corrects them and says that the word maegi actually means “wise.” Daenerys thinks that protecting Mirri from Khal Drogo’s men will lead to goodwill from Mirri, but Mirri ultimately tricks Daenerys into sacrificing her unborn son Rhaego so that Khal Drogo can have another lease on life. Khal Drogo’s new life, though, turns out to be a catatonic state. Mirri says she wanted to punish Drogo for invading her town and ensure that his unborn son wouldn’t follow in his footsteps. In response, Daenerys burns Mirri alive on Drogo’s funeral pyre. She thanks Mirri for teaching her a valuable lesson about the limits of trust and the necessity of strategic thinking.
