‘And Women Must Weep’

by

Henry Handel Richardson

Miss Biddons is an older woman and caretaker of Dolly alongside Auntie Cha. She doesn’t accompany Dolly and Auntie Cha to the ball but stays home instead. Still, Miss Biddons disciplines Dolly and tries to ensure that Dolly doesn’t make shameful mistakes in social situations. She tells Dolly not to forget her steps in the waltz, demonstrating her concern that Dolly act in accordance with social norms. Like Auntie Cha, Miss Biddons places great importance on Dolly’s adherence to society’s expectations for young women.
