Judith Character Analysis

Judithis Jerry’s wife. She never appears on stage, and Jerry seems to think little about her. When Emma reveals that she saw Judith out with someone at a restaurant, Jerry feels a surge of jealousy—illogical enough, given his own extended affair. Jerry believes that Judith never finds out about his cheating. He has reason to believe Judith is having an affair of her own, but he displays a general unwillingness to explore the question. The audience cannot know whether Judith indeed remains ignorant of Jerry’s infidelity, or whether Jerry’s assurance merely reflects another instance of his reluctance to think about unpleasant things.

EMMA: I wonder. I wonder if everyone knew, all the time.
