Samuel Bowditch Character Analysis

Is the second youngest of Mother and Father’s children; he is brother to Mary Bowditch, Hab Bowditch, Lizza Bowditch, Nat Bowditch, William Bowditch, and Lois Bowditch. Samuel doesn’t like or do as well in school as his elder brothers William and Nat, but he joins the crew of a Salem merchant vessel when he’s a teenager. Samuel dies of fever in the West Indies before Nat’s first voyage.

Now they faced months at sea—the terrors of the Cape—the grilling passage through the Sunda Strait—a layover in Batavia—where men died like flies.
