Code Name Verity

by

Elizabeth Wein

Maman Thibaut is Papa Thibaut’s husband and Mitraillette, Amélie, and Etienne’s mother. She, along with her husband and daughters, is a member of the Resistance. Maman is originally from Alsace, so in addition to French, she speaks fluent Alsatian German. It’s her idea to transform Maddie into Käthe Habicht, the family’s distant cousin from Alsace, so they can stop hiding Maddie in their barn. Maman is a kind, comforting presence while Maddie is in France. She attempts to send a dozen silver spoons back to England with Maddie, but Maddie refuses.
