Lolo’s sister Florida, or Florie, is “the matriarch of the matriarchs” in Jose Antonio Vargas’s family. After she married a Filipino American who was serving in the U.S. Marines, she became the first person in the family to move to the U.S. She then petitioned for her other siblings, including Lolo, to follow her.
