Betsy Woodall Character Analysis

Betsy is Demon’s paternal grandmother. Betsy is suspicious and distrustful of men, and the novel intimates that she survived an abusive relationship when she was younger. She is deeply invested in her community and has helped raise more than 11 girls who didn’t have homes. She lives with her brother, Dick, and one of the girls she is raising, Jane Ellen. Another one of those girls grew up to marry Coach Winfield before dying of cancer, and Betsy helps facilitate Demon’s foster placement in Coach’s house. Betsy never takes money from DSS or any other social service agency, believing that those agencies are corrupt and serve themselves more than the people they claim to help.

He said a name for this kind of people that sounded like “dolly”[…]. He said he never would get used to how nice Americans are to each other […].
