Coach Winfield Character Analysis

Coach Winfield is the widower of one of the girls Betsy. After Demon finds Betsy, she identifies Coach as someone who might help raise Demon and arranges for Demon to live with Coach and Coach’s daughter, Angus. Coach is a hands-off parent to both Demon and Angus, but he also cares deeply about them both. He lives, eats, and breathes football and (correctly) identifies Demon as a potential star tight-end, which Demon loves. Coach struggles with alcoholism, though, and his own difficulties with addiction might account for his failure to provide adequate care to Demon when he is injured during a game. Dr. Watts later prescribes Demon a regiment of opioids that ultimately causes Demon to have his own issues with addiction.
