Ella Minnow Pea

by

Mark Dunn

The editor of the Island Tribune, the island of Nollop’s only newspaper. Mr. Kleeman quickly gains two offenses after the High Island Council bans the use of the letter “Z”, and Kleeman decides to run a story in the newspaper entitled “The Bees’ Lament” in protest which contains several thousand uses of “Z.” Ella admires the act of protest but she also calls it a cowardly action because it results in the paper being shut down and it thus leaves the citizens without any kind of news source. This emphasizes the need for large-scale resistance against the Council instead of one-off symbolic acts of rebellion.
