Jack Spades Character Analysis

Jack Spades is a character in one of Monk’s short stories. He hosts a trivia game show on which a white man (Hall Dullard) and Black man (Tom Wahzetepe) take turns answering trivia questions to determine the show’s new champion. However, the show is patently rigged. While Spades poses impossibly easy questions to Hall (who nevertheless fails to answer even one correctly), he asks Tom ridiculously complex, technical questions—and he is irate when Tom answers each one correctly and in great detail. It is only reluctantly and angrily that Spades announces Tom as the new winner.
