Fever Pitch: Chapter 39 Summary & Analysis

Summary
Analysis
Nick goes to Highbury stadium with his dad for the last time. The game is uneventful, but Nick remembers it because it marks a change in his relationship with his dad. At this point, football is no longer the main activity that Nick and his dad bond over. Nick has become close to his stepmother and his half siblings. He even lives with them for a year in London. Nick reflects that he and his father are closer than most.
It's surprising that Nick describes feeling close to his father. While Nick’s dad was in France, Nick was fairly estranged from him—Nick didn’t even know that his dad had a new wife and children until Jonathon was four or five years old. Though football is no longer the main activity through which Nick and his dad bond, it laid the foundation upon which their new relationship was built.
