Teachers and parents! Our Teacher Edition on Good Night, Mr. Tom makes teaching easy.
Mrs. Hartridge is a young, pretty schoolteacher in Little Weirwold on whom William Beech has an innocent crush. Toward the end of William’s first schoolyear in Little Weirwold, she goes on maternity leave and gives birth to a baby girl, Peggy. After William’s baby sister dies following their mother Mrs. Beech’s abandonment, he avoids visiting Mrs. Hartridge and her new baby for a long time. Yet when he does visit Mrs. Hartridge, seeing her breastfeed Peggy helps him realize that he couldn’t have saved his baby sister, who needed food that William couldn’t give her. Thus, Mrs. Hartridge functions as a foil for Mrs. Beech: she is a good and generous maternal figure where Mrs. Beech is a wicked and abusive one.
