Frederick O’Nally Character Analysis

Sal O’Nally’s son, an aspiring but struggling thespian who accompanies his father and the other politicians on their visit to the prison. When Felix first hears about him from Estelle, Frederick seems like a spoiled brat, only able to make it into theater schools with help from his politician father. However, Frederick turns out to be an unassuming and genuinely motivated young man—and perhaps more importantly to Felix, he admires the older director’s work. Felix uses his rogue production of The Tempest to throw together Frederick and Anne-Marie, who embark on a relationship by the end of the novel. After his return to power, Felix also gives Frederick a job at the Makeshiweg Festival, jumpstarting the young man’s career. Frederick corresponds to the character Ferdinand in The Tempest.
