Hermione Granger Character Analysis

One of Harry’s best friends. Hermione is indisputably the smartest witch in her class at Hogwarts, as well as the hardest working. Nevertheless, because of her Muggle heritage she’s often exposed to prejudiced comments from professors like Slughorn or outright bigotry from Malfoy. Her intelligence often proves indispensable to the trio’s efforts to fight Voldemort, as she’s able to supply critical information or decipher complex puzzles. Hermione also often acts as the trio’s moral compass, forcing Harry and Ron to think about the ethical implications of their more dubious choices, like relying on the Half-Blood Prince’s annotations or using house-elf labor to follow Malfoy. Like Ginny, Hermione is far more emotionally mature than Harry and Ron, and this disparity sometimes makes her feel alienated and lonely: while Hermione is comfortable with her crush on Ron, she has to deal with his mood swings and hurtful behavior as he grapples with his feelings for her. At the end of the novel Hermione prepares to accompany Harry on his journey to find the Horcruxes, affirming the bravery and loyalty she’s shown since her first year at Hogwarts.
