Bill Moore is Mary’s biological father and Mary’s mother’s first husband. Bill Moore “was part Indian, but mostly white,” and Mary inherited this biracial identity, which she struggled with for much of her life. Bill Moore left Mary’s mother shortly after she became pregnant with Mary. Mary notes that this is not uncommon on reservations, where young men feel hopeless and demoralized from the poverty and lack of opportunities.
