Dish Boggett Character Analysis

Despite his young age (only 22 at the start of the drive), Dishwater Boggett is an experienced south Texas cowhand. He hangs around the Dry Bean Saloon because he’s in love with Lorena Wood. Call hires him to join the cattle drive and appoints him top hand. Dish rides point all the way to Montana and Call leaves him in charge on the rare occasions when both he and Augustus are away from camp. Dish is proud of his skills as a cowboy—he rarely dismounts from his horse unless it’s absolutely necessary, and although he obeys, he resents it when Call sets him to work doing manual labor like digging wells or felling trees. Nevertheless, he’s a generally friendly man who takes Newt and the other young men under his wing and who capably commands the other cowhands. He draws his wages and quits the company after Augustus dies so he can return to Lorena in Ogallala, and he stays on to help Clara, July, and Cholo run the horse farm even though he doesn’t get many hopeful signs of interest from Lorena.

Chapter 60 Quotes

“Because of Jake we lost ’em both, I guess,” Dish said. “Jake is a god-damn bastard.”

It was painful to Newt to have to think of Jake that way. He still remembered how Jake had played with him when he was a little child, and that Jake had made his mother get a lively, merry look in her eyes. All the years Jake had been gone, Newt had remembered him fondly and supposed that if he ever did come back he would be a hero. But it had to be admitted that Jake’s behavior since his return had not been heroic at all. It bordered on the cowardly, particularly his casual return to card playing once Lorena had been stolen.
