The Olympian Character Analysis

A competitor in the last Olympics, the Olympian visits Mr. Mahmood’s sports shop with a young boy, probably his son. Although Mr. Mahmood doesn’t speak to the Olympian directly, he thinks to himself that the man seems warm and good-natured, and the Olympian even signs a few autographs for customers. When Mr. Mahmood meets the Olympian’s eye however, Mr. Mahmood feels weak and turns away. With a successful athletic career and a child, the Olympian represents the future that Mr. Mahmood would have had if he hadn’t “wasted” his life, which is what he fears he has done. Mr. Mahmood’s decision to not speak with the Olympian and his inability to meet the man’s gaze suggests that Mr. Mahmood feels insecure about how his life has panned out.
