My Year of Rest and Relaxation

by

Ottessa Moshfegh

Natasha is the narrator’s former boss at Ducat. She fires the narrator for sleeping on the job and for slacking off in general. Natasha features artists whom she considers “good investment[s],” like Ping Xi, signaling that she cares more about wealth and following trends than the quality of the art itself. In this way, she validates the narrator’s cynical, disillusioned attitude toward the art world and toward society in general. After Natasha fires her, the narrator defecates on the gallery’s floor in retaliation.
