John Character Analysis

John is Matilda’s husband. He socializes with Fanny, but he despises Fanny’s father, Mr. Squeers. He is also Nicholas’s close friend. After Nicholas runs away from Dotheboys Hall, John lends him money so Nicholas can return to England. And when Squeers kidnaps Smike, John helps Smike escape. Nicholas’s relationship with John shows Nicholas’s capacity to gain friends and provides an example of the mutual loyalty that defines Nicholas’s friendships.
