The neighbor lives next to the Nicklebys when they move to the cottage owned by the Cheeryble brothers. The neighbor makes gestures toward Mrs. Nickleby that she considers romantic, including tossing cucumbers over the fence that separates the two houses. Mrs. Nickleby declines those advances but is nonetheless flattered by them. She is incredulous when the neighbor’s attendant says that the neighbor is mentally unwell.
