One Day

by

David Nicholls

Emma Morley begins the novel in 1988 as a student with a Yorkshire accent at Edinburgh University. After nursing a crush on fellow student Dexter Mayhew for several years, they finally spend the night together, and from then on, their lives continue to intersect. Emma has high ideals but often struggles to live according to them due to financial insecurity. Her early years after graduation are full of disappointments like an unsatisfying job at a Mexican restaurant and a dispassionate relationship with Ian, whom she eventually realizes she doesn’t love. In spite of her earlier crush on Dexter, Emma tries for many years to maintain a platonic relationship with him, and the two go through periods where they fall out and lose contact. Ultimately, however, once Emma has achieved her goal of succeeding as a writer and Dexter has gone through a divorce and started to get his life back on track, things align for them, and they finally begin a relationship. Emma and Dexter’s long-awaited relationship isn’t without its challenges, however. They with infertility issues, and their time together is cut tragically short when Emma dies in a bicycling accident. Her premature death prevents her from doing many things she hoped to accomplish in life, like having a child and writing a book that her 22-year-old self would’ve liked. Her death dramatizes the cruel randomness of life and suggests that a person should try to make the most of the time they have.
