One Day

by

David Nicholls

Ian is Emma’s coworker at a Tex-Mex restaurant. He eventually becomes her first serious relationship. He is a stand-up comedian who never stops making jokes, though very few of them are actually funny to Emma. At one point, he proposes to Emma, only for her to turn him down because she realizes she’ll never love him. Ian struggles for many years to accept this rejection, although eventually he moves on and starts his own family. He writes a letter trying to offer comfort to Dexter after Emma’s death.
