Skellig: Chapter 29 Summary & Analysis

Summary
Analysis
Later, Mina stares coldly at Michael from her tree; she calls Michael and his friends “fools” and “hyenas.” Angry, Michael kicks the garden wall and says that his friends think Mina is a monkey. He rebukes Mina for thinking she knows everything while everyone else knows nothing. Mina and Michael insult each other back and forth, and then Mina tells Michael to go home and play “stupid football.” Going into his yard, Michael crouches in the grass and tries not to cry.
Even though Leaky and Coot’s earlier behavior toward Mina upset Michael, he defends his friends to Mina, arguing that there are other things in the world besides just what she believes in and approves of. This suggests that Michael is unwilling to give up any of the various facets of his personality, one of which is represented by Mina and the other of which is represented by Leaky and Coot.
