El Chupacabras (Chencho) Character Analysis

El chupacabras is a wild beast with a ridge of prickly hair along its back. Teresita’s husband warns the Garzas that he wounded el chupacabras through its eye but that they should not show it any mercy. When the sisters first encounter el chupacabras, it takes the form of Chencho, a kind young goatherd who shares food and shelter with the girls. Chencho’s bloodlust causes him to transform unpredictably, and he bites Pita. Seeing that Chencho has no control over his transformation and is only a child like them, Odilia shows him mercy, leaving him blinded but alive. El chupacabras is meant to parallel the monstrous Cyclops in Homer’s Odyssey.

It felt weird, preparing for what might happen to us in the night. I felt like we were in a different world, a magical realm, where everything was larger than life. Did I think we could really kill the mythical chupacabras? Normally, I would have said not on your life, especially since we weren’t even sure if he was a vampire. […] Besides, there was something about being in those ruins in the Mexican countryside that made anything possible, because that night I believed in us—cinco hermanitas, five little sisters, together forever. No matter what.
