Aunt Annie is Clegg’s aunt, who is largely responsible for raising him. Aunt Annie is a vaguely religious woman with a traditional sense of morality, and she instills her values in Clegg. Miranda partially blames Aunt Annie for Clegg’s poor taste and inability to interact with women. Aunt Annie takes Mabel, her daughter, to Australia at the beginning of the novel, leaving Clegg on his own.
