An unnamed man Corrie meets during a postwar speaking tour in Germany, whom she recognizes as a guard she and Betsie encountered at Ravensbruck. Remembering all the suffering Betsie endured there, Corrie feels as though she can’t shake the man’s hand and forgive him; but when she prays to Jesus for help, she feels a warm sensation and finds that her arm rises automatically. She interprets this episode as evidence that practicing forgiveness, even in difficult circumstances, brings one closer to the divine.
