Raymond Character Analysis

Raymond is a nobleman and a friend of Lorenzo’s. He is in love with Lorenzo’s sister, Agnes, whom he met after the baron—Agnes and Lorenzo’s uncle—invited him to stay with the family at the castle of Lindenberg as thanks for rescuing the baroness from the murderous schemes of Baptiste and his gang of bandits. However, after Raymond unwittingly humiliates the baroness, who has fallen in love with him herself and is enraged to discover that he loves her niece instead, the baroness sends Agnes away to the convent of St. Clare to live out the rest of her days as a nun, thwarting the couple’s plans to elope. Raymond reunites with Agnes at the convent, but a clandestine sexual encounter leaves Agnes pregnant. When the prioress discovers Agnes’s sin, she fakes the young nun’s death and, unbeknownst to Raymond, keeps her prisoner in the convent’s crypt. Unable to accept that his beloved is lost to him forever, Raymond falls gravely ill. However, thanks to the unceasing efforts of Raymond’s loyal page, Theodore, the prioress’s schemes are eventually brought to life, and Agnes is rescued from the crypt and reunited with Raymond. The couple eventually marries and lives out the rest of their days in happiness.
