Summary
Analysis
One day six months later, police arrive at Somerset’s home in Cap Ferrat. They ask if he knows someone named Sophie Macdonald. He says she’s an acquaintance, and they tell him that she’s been missing for five days, and they recently found a body in the harbor. They ask Somerset to go to the police station in Toulon, where Sophie lived, to answer questions.
News of Sophie’s death comes right after Larry explains his spiritual enlightenment, suggesting again that Larry and Sophie are two sides of the same coin, both searching for some way to make sense of life after profound trauma, except while Larry sought and found spiritual insight, Sophie pursued self-destruction and found death.
