Mrs. Mavis Bangs Character Analysis

Mrs. Mavis Bangs is a Killick-Claw local who becomes one of Agnis Hamm’s employees. Mrs. Bangs has been married twice, the first time at age 15, and she has lost both her husbands. The first died at sea, the second in an airplane crash. After this, she vows not to marry again, unwilling to go through such grief a third time. In the shop, she makes herself indispensable to Agnis, and by the end of the book, it’s implied that the two may have begun a romantic relationship.

The sooner you get it over with, the sooner you say ‘Yes, it happened, and there’s nothing I can do about it,’ the sooner you can get on with your own life. You’ve got children to bring up. So you’ve got to get over it. What we have to get over, somehow we do. Even the worst things.”
