Noble Pilcher
Noble Pilcher is an entomologist who works for the Smithsonian along with Albert Roden. Together, Pilcher and Roden help Starling identify the moths found in the throats of Buffalo Bill’s victims. At the end of the novel, Starling and Pilcher become romantically involved.

Miggs
Miggs is a mentally ill man whose cell is next to Lecter’s. When Starling walks by him, Miggs throws semen in her face. Lecter finds Miggs’s behavior despicable and talks him into killing himself.
Will Graham
Will Graham is a former FBI agent who used to work under Crawford. Although the details are vague, he left the FBI because of an incident involving Lecter that left him disfigured.
Senator Ruth Martin
Senator Ruth Martin is the mother of Catherine Baker Martin, a young woman kidnapped by Buffalo Bill. She uses every resource at her disposal to get her daughter back. Crawford thinks her behavior is reckless.
Starling’s Father
Clarice Starling’s father only appears in Starling’s memories. When Starling was a child, he worked as a security guard and was shot by two drug addicts while on the job. He died a few months later in the hospital.
Benjamin Raspail
Benjamin Raspail is a former psychiatric patient of Lecter’s as well as a friend of Jame Gumb’s. Lecter learns about Gumb from Raspail and kills him when he gets sick of his company.
Ardelia Mapp
Ardelia Mapp is Starling’s roommate at Quantico. She is a good friend who always checks in on Starling to make sure she is okay.
Bella Crawford
Bella Crawford is Jack Crawford’s wife who suffers from a terminal illness. Throughout the novel, she becomes unresponsive and dies.
Everett Yow
Everett Yow is Benjamin Raspail’s executor. He shows Starling to Raspail’s car.
Jonetta Johnson
Jonetta Johnson is a newswoman with whom Starling argues outside of the container holding Raspail’s car.
Brigham
Brigham is Starling’s shooting instructor at Quantico. He is a stern man who cares about Starling and always highlights her skill to the rest of his class.
Sammie
Sammie is a mentally ill man who murdered his mother. He is put in the cell next to Lecter’s at the asylum after Miggs dies.
Lamar
Lamar is an insightful young man who helps Starling and Crawford while they are examining the body of a woman found murdered in West Virginia.
Dr. Alan Bloom
Dr. Alan Bloom is a psychologist who Senator Martin consults in the hunt for Buffalo Bill.
Klaus
Klaus is Raspail’s former lover. Starling finds his decapitated head in the back of Raspail’s car. Later, she learns that Jame Gumb murdered him.
Precious
Precious is Jame Gumb’s dog. She is the only thing other than himself that he cares about.
Dr. Danielson
Dr. Danielson works for the Gender Identity Clinic at Johns Hopkins. He wants to help Crawford but fears that doing so will further stigmatize of his patients.
Barney
Barney looks after Lecter at the Baltimore Hospital for the Criminally Insane. He expresses concerns when Chilton takes Lecter to Tennessee.
Gumb’s Mother
Gumb’s mother is a former beauty pageant contestant. She puts Gumb into foster care because she does not feel she can raise him.
Major Bachman
Major Bachman is an agent of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. He tries to get answers out of Lecter, but this tactic only causes Lecter to shut down.
Paul Krendler
Paul Krendler works for the United States Department of Justice. He tries to get Starling fired because he dislikes that she disobeyed his orders.
Officer Pembry
Officer Pembry is one of the two police officers responsible for directly overseeing Lecter in the Memphis courthouse. Lecter murders him when escapes.

Sargent Tate is the commanding officer at the Memphis courthouse, which Lecter escapes from.
