Shao Lin Character Analysis

Shao Lin, herself a prominent physicist, is also Ye Zhetai’s wife and the mother of Ye Wenjie and Ye Wenxue. Unlike her husband, Shao is capable of bending her scientific beliefs to conform to the political standards of the day. Over and over again, she chooses personal opportunism over ideological purity or community ties, as can be seen when she joins her husband’s torturers or forbids Ye Wenjie to ever talk about their shared traumatic past.
