Reverend Moreland T. Woods Character Analysis

Reverend Moreland T. Woods is a charismatic, hypocritical visiting preacher at the Baptist church that Mattie Michael attends. When Etta attends church with Mattie, she identifies Rev. Woods as a man who could support her and make her respectable through marriage—but Rev. Woods notices Etta’s robust sexuality and judges her as suitable only for a one-night stand. After he manipulates her into sex, he drops her off at Brewster Place and speeds away.
