Terrence Roberts Character Analysis

Roberts was a junior in high school, like Melba, when he joined the Little Rock Nine. She describes him as tall and thin and “a friend since first grade.” Roberts was humorous and incisive. Melba recalls loving the way in which, at their old school, he always hummed “a cheerful tune when he wasn’t talking.” At Central, Melba notices that he has become “nervous” and “not as cheerful.”
