Franklin D. Roosevelt was the President of the United States from 1933 to 1945. When the Supreme Court rejected many of his New Deal economic policies, Roosevelt tried to expand the Court and pack it with loyal judges—but his congressional allies refused to support him. Acemoglu and Robinson view this as an example of how inclusive institutions protect their inclusiveness and fight off absolutism in a virtuous circle.
