Marie Character Analysis

Marie is Woyzeck’s lover and the mother of his child. Woyzeck lives with her at the beginning of the play, though he is hardly home because he is constantly working, and he stops coming by altogether after he catches wind of Marie’s affair with the drum major. The play characterizes Marie as somewhat vain and selfish, but it also affords her some sympathy. Although she betrays Woyzeck by carrying out an affair with the drum major, her behavior—though callous—is at least somewhat understandable. Her life is characterized by hardship, loneliness, and suffering. Marie’s community looks down on her for being a poor, unwed mother. Although Woyzeck supports her and their child as best he can, he is hardly ever home, and Marie is left to raise their child largely on her own. On the rare occasions Woyzeck is home, he is often withdrawn and distracted. At the end of the play, Woyzeck stabs Marie to death in a fit of jealous rage.
