Elif Shafak

Tarkan is Leila’s beloved little brother. He is Binnaz and Haroun’s second child and long-awaited first son, his name meaning “bold and strong” in Turkish. A couple of years after Tarkan’s birth, when a doctor informs Leila’s family that he has Down syndrome and is not likely to live past adolescence, Haroun perceives the news as personal punishment from Allah. He vows to recommit himself to religious worship, quitting his job and forcing his two wives to shoulder the majority of child rearing responsibilities on their own. Over time, Tarkan grows increasingly ill. He passes away in 1963, resulting in Leila’s decision to run away from home once and for all.
