A city in northwestern Belgium that played an essential part in the First World War, due to its location along the Germans’ planned invasion path into France. The 1917 Third Battle of Ypres extended out to a number of nearby towns, like Messines and Passchendaele, and a number of the play’s protagonists fought there.
