Another doctor, an old man of around sixty with a shaved pale face, whom Laura’s father calls to ask about the illness that has been infecting the peasant girls in the nearby villages. They speak for a while in private, and Laura’s father laughs at his suggestions. Although Laura is unaware at the time of what they were discussing, she comes to realize they were likely talking about the existence of vampires.
