The Reconstruction era lasted from 1865–1877, following the American Civil War, and was aimed at rebuilding the South and helping masses of formerly enslaved Black Americans secure rights and adjust to life as newly free men and women. Unfortunately, Reconstruction was short-lived and relatively ineffective. while Black Americans were granted new Constitutional protections, those protections were rarely (if ever) enforced, and jilted ex-Confederates began seeking new ways to police, brutalize and control free Black people.
