Mr. Ghali Character Analysis

Mr. Ghali is the owner of Golly’s Market. When Demon lives with the McCobbs, he works at the trash heap behind Golly’s Market. The trash heap is run separately from the market, and Demon fears he may be working for a meth lab. When he works at the trash pile, Demon often goes into the market and talks with Mr. Ghali, who seems to make extra food for him and the other people who work on the trash pile. Mr. Ghali tells Demon about his own experiences working on a trash pile while growing up in India. He describes growing up as a Dalit, the lowest rank of the caste system in India, and considered an “untouchable.” Demon uses Mr. Ghali’s description of discrimination and prejudice within a caste-based system to understand the ostracization and prejudice he faces in his own life, as well as class discrimination in the U.S. more broadly.

He said his parents, sisters, and all their dump friends were so-called no-toucher people. Meaning if they touched food or anything at all, it was like, doomed. Regular people would have none of it. Same for bodies, no shaking hands. If he let his shadow touch a high-class person, they’d call the cops to come beat the hell out of him. He said a name for this kind of people that sounded like “dolly”[…]. He said he never would get used to how nice Americans are to each other […]. But if we had a word for that kind of person in America, it would get used.
