Herbert Quain is a fictional literary friend of Borges. Upon his death, Borges decides to write about his work. Borges delves into four works of Quain’s, all of which put some twist on their literary form. Quain describes himself as not belonging to art but to the history of art. Borges concludes his discussion of Quain by saying that he himself based his story “The Circular Ruins” on one of Quain’s works.
