In the present, Machado realizes that trying to tell her story without its central part was “poison.” Because she couldn’t express her predicament or see the reality of it, she drank that poison.
While storytelling allows Machado to take control of her narrative, she also realizes it can be dangerous, giving her the power to erase and ignore the abuse she’s experiencing.
