Loneliness is pervasive among each of Interview with the Vampire’s main characters. From the very beginning, Louis grapples with the solitude that accompanies his new existence as a vampire. Despite Lestat’s physical presence and his mentorship, Louis feels a deep sense of isolation, as his moral compass diverges significantly from Lestat’s. Louis’s struggle to maintain his humanity and fight his vampiric nature exacerbates his sense of alienation. Lestat, despite his charismatic and domineering personality, is not immune to loneliness either. He turns Louis into a vampire because he longs for companionship, even if he does not want to admit it. His interactions with Louis often reveal an underlying fear of abandonment and, indeed, after Louis leaves him, he has to turn other people into vampires to fill the void. Meanwhile, Claudia’s transformation into a vampire introduces a different kind of loneliness. Because she’s eternally trapped in a child’s body but eventually develops an adult’s mind, she struggles to connect with others, human or vampire. Particularly when Louis discovers that vampires can, in fact, die, and that this happens when a vampire accepts that a lonely life isn’t actually worth living at all, the novel presents loneliness as a deadly force, and companionship as life-giving and healing.
In addition to trying to form relationships, the novel’s vampire characters also turn to material pleasures to give their lives meaning, with little long-term success. Lestat, Louis, and Claudia all enjoy expensive clothes and furnishings, and Claudia once forces a dollmaker to make her a doll of an adult woman rather than the artisan’s usual baby dolls. Still, the novel shows how these material goods can’t actually bring the characters happiness: as Claudia destroying her doll suggests, she longs for genuine connections with others, and an inanimate stand-in of a human being comes nowhere close. Life, Interview with the Vampire shows, is about forming relationships with others—without fulfilling relationships, the characters’ trajectories show, life ceases to have meaning at all.
