Gräuben Character Analysis

Gräuben is Axel’s fiancée and Lidenbrock’s ward. She is 17 years old and shares Axel’s interest in minerology. They initially keep their relationship a secret from Lidenbrock, but when Axel accidentally reveals to him, Lidenbrock is too distracted by Saknussemm’s journey to care. Gräuben wishes that Axel could act and speak as an equal to Lidenbrock, and she encourages him to join his uncle on his adventure so that Axel can earn glory and independence. Her predictions prove correct, and Axel returns home a brave and independent young man. The two marry at the end of the book.
