Two Dog is a Native American who lives with Mr. Thompson up in the mountains. Ralph befriends him while he and Mr. Thompson are staying with Ralph’s family, learning about his life and home through sign language. Later, when their horse Bill grows sick, Ralph secretly visits Two Dog in the mountains to enlist his help. Two Dog and Mr. Thompson promptly return Ralph home that night, and Ralph wakes the next morning to find Bill is cured.

I thought maybe I could talk to Two Dog in sign language, so I raised my eyebrows, put both palms together and laid my face down against them; then I looked far off along the mountains. Two Dog knew I was asking him where he slept—where his home was—just as well as Grandfather would have known.
