Cousin Phil Character Analysis

Cousin Phil, a relative of Ralph’s family, is a businessman based in Denver who sells gold stock. While visiting them in New Hampshire, he convinces Ralph’s parents to move to Colorado, promising them prosperity and better work for Ralph’s ailing father. Though Ralph’s father’s health does improve while working on the ranch, Cousin Phil’s promise of wealth proves misleading, as Ralph’s family often struggles economically. Ironically, Cousin Phil runs into economic trouble himself during the gold panic, nearly going bankrupt. This underscores the fact that, though well-intentioned, Cousin Phil is not always a reliable man.
