Joe Boot
Wilbarger is a cowboy whose horses are stolen by Mexican bandits and recovered for him by McCrae, Call, Jake Spoon, Deets, Pea Eye, Dish Boggett, and Newt. A man named Chick is his deputy. He encounters July Johnson, Roscoe, Joe, and Janey while they’re looking for Jake Spoon. Later, Gus comes on Wilbarger’s drive after rescuing Lorena, and Wilbarger gives Gus and Lorie a tent and some food to last while they wait for their own people to catch up. After successfully driving his herd to Dodge City, Wilbarger is attacked by the Suggs brothers and Fish Lip. Although he escapes the attack, he later succumbs to his wounds along the bank of the Arkansas River, where Call, Gus, Pea Eye, Deets, and Newt bury him and mark his grave with buffalo bones.

Quotes
He didn’t tell Newt all he knew. He didn’t tell him that even when life seemed easy, it kept on getting harder. Deets liked his work, liked being part of the outfit and having his name on the sign; yet he often felt sad. His main happiness consisted of sitting with his back against the water trough at night, watching the sky and the changing moon.
He had known several men who blew their heads off, and he had pondered it much. It seemed to him it was probably because they could not take enough happiness from just the sky and the moon to carry them over the low feelings that came to all men.
Those feelings hadn’t come to the boy yet.
