Chen Yeun Character Analysis

Chen Yeun teaches Chinese folk-dancing at the Beijing Dance Academy. He is one of Li Cunxin’s favorite teachers. During Cunxin’s second year at the academy, however, Chen Yeun’s homosexuality comes to the attention of the Chinese Communist Party. As a result, he is dismissed from his post, publicly disgraced, and sent to the countryside for reeducation. He eventually returns, but he is no longer allowed to teach dance. Instead, he is assigned to the academy as a carpenter. When he loses his fingers in an accident, he is demoted yet again and reassigned to work as a janitor.
