Job Legh Character Analysis

Job Legh, grandfather to Margaret, is a “little wiry-looking old man” obsessed with natural science and collecting specimens such as scorpions and flying fish. After Margaret and Mary Barton form a close friendship, Job becomes a friend to Mary and John Barton. Though Job initially believes that Jem Wilson is guilty of Harry Carson’s murder, he agrees to help Mary find an alibi for Jem. He also finds Jem a lawyer, Mr. Bridgnorth. Unlike John Barton, Job is antipathetic to unions and labor organizing, but after John’s death, Job is still able to provide a curious Mr. Carson with such an eloquent defense of John’s point of view and motives for murdering Harry Carson that Mr. Carson subsequently devotes himself to improving labor conditions and class relations in Manchester.
