Ping Xi Character Analysis

Ping Xi is the star artist of Ducat, the gallery the narrator worked at before Natasha fired her. Though not untalented, he cares more about shocking people than making good art, and the narrator finds his work to be vapid, meaningless, and sometimes cruel. His first show at Ducat featured splatter paintings, which he made by masturbating onto canvases. He gives the paintings serious, political titles to inject them with meaning and cultural relevance, but the narrator believes this is disingenuous. His more recent work features taxidermied dogs, and it’s rumored that he raised the dogs from puppies and then euthanized them once they had grown to his desired size. The narrator arranges a deal with him midway through her hibernation: he provides her with food and other basic necessities so that she can finish her hibernation without having to leave her apartment, and in exchange, she allows him to work out of her place and feature her in his art.

Chapter 7 Quotes

The world was out there still, but I hadn’t looked at it in months. It was too much to consider it all, stretching out, a circular planet covered in creatures and things growing, all of it spinning slowly on an axis created by what—some freak accident? It seemed implausible. The world could be flat just as easily as it could be round. Who could prove anything? In time, I would understand, I told myself.
